5 Delicious Types Of Artisan Bread To Try

Blog

Are you tired of soft, tasteless sandwich bread from the grocery store shelf? Then it's time you try some artisan bread from a local bakery instead. The term "artisan bread" can really refer to any number of different varieties of bread that are made by hand and with classic methods. Here are five types that definitely deserve a spot on your must-try list.

Baguettes

A traditional French bread, the baguette is a long, skinny loaf. The interior is firm with big air pockets, and the exterior of the loaf has a lovely, crunchy crust. Baguettes are delicious when served with olive oil for dipping. If you slice one thinly and coat it in olive oil and garlic before toasting it in a warm oven, you'll get what's known as crostini — round, crunchy bread pieces that are perfect for spreads and dips.

Sourdough

Sourdough is usually sold in a big round or rectangular loaf. It has a very rich flavor as it is made via fermentation. The interior of sourdough is tender, but not overly soft, with an even crumb. Sourdough is lovely for an artisan sandwich, and it makes great grilled cheese. It's also the perfect bread to toast and serve with jam in the morning.

Country Loaf

If you want a big, fluffy loaf, but one with a lot more body than a typical, mass-produced loaf of bread, you want to try an artisan country loaf. This is the bread that grandma used to make — it's enriched with eggs, milk, and sometimes butter to give it a soft and pillow-like texture and a soft crust. A country loaf is perfect for serving at dinner time with butter, and it also makes for nice sandwiches.

Ciabatta

Ciabatta loaves are always big rectangles. This bread has a dense texture with a really airy crumb. It's akin to a big baguette with a little less crust. Ciabatta is often used to make sandwiches — and especially grilled paninis. Its pockets allow it to grill up nicely.

Brioche

Brioche is a French bread that is highly enriched with lots of eggs and some sugar. It's really a cross between bread and a pastry. You can serve it toasted with honey and jam. It's also delicious when coated in egg and turned into French toast.

The next time you're at a bakery, definitely buy one or two of these artisan breads. Each one is a new and different experience. To learn more about artisan bread, contact a bakery in your area.
